Bridging history and augmented reality

The Brief

Museums are increasingly unable to resonate with a younger audience. Liberty Hall Museum identified the need for an interactive wayfinding system — helping visitors navigate while making history more accessible.

The Solution

Liberty Hall Ground — an interactive, augmented reality wayfinding project using an identifiable icon system, QR-coded champion tree posts, and an AR-enhanced map to connect with a tech-savvy youth audience.

The Liberty Hall Wayfinding project tackled the challenge of making a historic museum site engaging and navigable for modern visitors — particularly younger audiences who expect digital, interactive experiences. The solution merged physical wayfinding design with AR technology, creating a layered experience that rewarded exploration.

The icon system served as the visual backbone — clear, consistent pictograms that mapped the grounds and guided visitors between points of historical significance. QR codes embedded in signage linked directly to each champion tree's dedicated museum page, while a collaboration with Computer Science students brought a full website to life. My role: I designed the wayfinding assets (maps, icons, illustrations) and integrated the AR components into the website the CS student team built.

What was built

Icon System

A comprehensive pictogram set designed for the Liberty Hall grounds — clear, historically-informed icons mapping every point of significance across the museum property.

AR Wayfinding Map

An interactive augmented reality layer over the physical map — activated by mobile devices to surface contextual historical information at each location.

QR-Coded Signage

Physical posts installed at champion tree locations throughout the grounds, each featuring scannable QR codes linking to the tree's dedicated museum page.

Museum Website

Designed and developed in collaboration with Computer Science students — a digital complement to the physical wayfinding system, extending the experience online.
